Education

The smarter the journalists are, the better off society is.
[For] to a degree, people read the press to inform themselves.
And the better the teacher, the better the student body.

Warren Buffett
American Investor, Businessman, and Philanthropist

If any industry should be utterly dedicated to promoting the highest in human potential while giving a sense of well-being and self-worth, it is that of education. Though it is true that education is achieved and not received, the impact of administrators and teachers bears a direct impact on the very future of society.

The goal of education is not the accumulation of the thoughts of others but rather the imparting of the discipline that constructs one’s own thoughts. Most everyone has a personal story of an educator or administrator who made a difference in their life and who imparted “learning” far beyond the subject they taught or the position they held.

The Saint Irving Program is a meaningful way to celebrate those who have made and are making a difference in their lives through education and learning.

Nonprofit

This is the duty of our generation as we enter the twenty-first century—solidarity with the weak, the persecuted, the lonely, the sick, and those in despair.
It is expressed by the desire to give a noble and humanizing meaning to a community in which all members will define themselves not by their own identity but by that of others.

Elie Wiesel
Nobel Laureate and Holocaust Survivor

It can be said that in good times, organizations need good people; but in tough times, they need great people. No matter what an organization has been formed to accomplish, reaching its many goals rests on its board members, employees, and volunteers to cooperatively work together with dedication.

In the nonprofit sector in particular, it is often the case that quiet heroes work tirelessly to advance the common vision and goals of that organization to which they are committed. The spirit behind most nonprofit organizations is one of unselfish giving to a community and individuals in that community.

The Saint Irving Project is an effective and heartwarming way to present a meaningful commendation to those who have “gone the extra mile” in nonprofit organization efforts.

You don't really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round will wave at his parents every time around—and why his parents will always wave back.

Journalist of Religion

It is said that the hand that rocks the cradle is the greatest influence to the future. Parenting is an unlearned skill that often presents the greatest challenge of all in life.

While trying to impart character, humor, and responsibility to their children, parents are also the taskmasters of discipline, fairness, and justice. Parenting is a balancing act that can be tough to carry out.

There will never be a perfect parent, yet there are parents who have risen to the task in stellar fashion and have demonstrated personal excellence through their parenting. These have reached toward the honorable goal of producing the highest in human development and potential in their children.

Saint Irving’s is proud to reward such people and acknowledge their efforts.

Imagination, energy, and dreams; draw any group of young adults together, and you will soon find that they are brimming with these virtues.

Young adults. They have left their teen years to join the ranks of the adult world. Such a special transition time in life can generate a person invoking the best of both worlds.

Loving, caring, enthusiastic, and full of potential, members of this awesome community take on serious challenges and win! They see the world and the tasks at hand as doable and, once inspired, are unstoppable in pursuit of their goals.

Saint Irving’s applauds the impact of the Young Adult Community as it brings to fore the “can do” attitude making a difference for all.

The future is like a ball of clay; everything we do is another step to shaping it. It's up to you to shape it into a masterpiece."

When I get old, I want to be able to look back on my clay and see a masterpiece, not a mess of useless material.

Kenneth P.
Student, Age 16, Washington

Abigail Van Buren, a notable advice columnist, once wrote, "If you want teens to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders." Far from being irresponsible and demanding “kids,” teens in every sector of society are hard-working, responsible, innovative, positive-minded futurists who are just plain fun to be around!

Sure, the media highlights the few “bad apples,” but it is an unfair stroke of a broad brush to paint them all in a negative light. For this reason, St. Irving's finds it a special joy when rewarding the good work and positive contributions of teens worldwide. From volunteering to vigilant caregiving and beyond, teens are making a difference. Let the Saint Irving Award show them how much you’ve noticed!

Children make you want to start life over.

Muhammad Ali
Three-Time World Heavyweight Champion

A kid is one great big creative opportunity. Our best hopes and dreams for the distant future lie with our kids. Saint Irving loves kids and aims to encourage them toward good values, self-respect, and toward becoming strong, independent, and honorable adults.

The Saint Irving Award is an appropriate encouragement for kids. It provides a full page with one or more child’s picture(s) and a description of the reason they are being recognized. These are placed on a long-lasting/permanent page on the Internet; all this for a very nominal cost. What better way to reward good behavior or outstanding achievement and to show your love for someone special?

To keep the heart unwrinkled, to be hopeful, kindly, cheerful, reverent—that is to triumph over old age.

Thomas Bailey Aldrich
American Poet, Novelist

Experience of life, wisdom through failure and triumph; members of the Seniors Community are often the most valued asset for producing a positive impact into any initiative.

Choosing to give more back to life than taking from it, they are often found tirelessly working and contributing to make most any worthwhile cause a success.

Often at the very heart of organizations and projects are seniors serving in quiet resolve to do the work at hand, rarely seeking the limelight and often downplaying their contributions.

The Saint Irving certificate is a loving way of recognizing these dedicated people.

I know the world is hungry for good ministry.

James Green Somerville
16th Senior Pastor in the 228-Year History of First Baptist Church Richmond, Virginia

Of all the places where a Saint Irving Award is appropriate, it is most appropriate for outstanding ministry efforts. A key idea behind the Saint Irving site is that there is an invisible spiritual world and that the tangible world of what we can see, hear, taste, and feel is not all there is. We often talk about encouragement and motivation on this site. But we believe that the depths of the human spirit can only be fully understood in the context of man’s and woman’s yearning for God. And that the Kingdom of God, here on earth, is coming.

The Saint Irving Award provides an outstanding way to encourage and recognize ministry efforts, particularly those that help bring Christians together in harmony, as is mandated by scripture like John 17:21.

“ ...that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”
—John 17:21 (NIV)
